Representatives of non-profit organizations and public administration, regional development experts, university professors and land-use specialists gathered in Tutrakan on March 22nd and 23rd to discuss the local fisheries community development strategy in the Silistra - Calarasi region.
The forum session was hosted by Zdravko Sechkov, CEO of „FRMS Consult“, contractor for the task of strategy development. He presented an analysis of the development opportunities and threats to the cultural and historical heritage of fisheries communities, as well as the proposed priorities and measures for its conservation and use for economic development.
Participants discussed specific changes in legislation and regional practices that would facilitate the conservation and exposure of the cultural heritage of fisheries communities in the region. Later, they had the opportunity to get acquainted with the attractive tourist sites of the tangible and intangible heritage of the fisheries community in the town of Tutrakan, as well as to share their proposals for the development of tourism in the cross-border region. Their project ideas include: advertising the Silistra-Calarasi region as part of the Danube Cultural Route, the development of new regulated sites for accommodation and food along the Danube River around the two cities, which are close to the river and nature, organizing joint sports and cultural initiatives, dedicated to the river etc.
The discussion was the first of a series of five forums, dedicated to the co-development strategies in 10 fisheries communities in the Romania-Bulgaria cross-border region, developed under project “Memofish - memory and the future. Stories about the Danube Civilization“, which is implemented by the Bulgarian-Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in partnership with Association „Paralel – Silistra“, Rousse Regional Museum of History, Acces Association – Calarasi and Fishing Local Action Group Association „Dunarea Calaraseana “ with the financial support of Programme Interreg V-A Romania – Bulgaria.
