Ship with smart sensors cleans up the Danube

The ‘Ferry Porsche’ foundation and the Audi ’ecological foundation‘ are starting a joint mission to clean the Danube River. The action is expected to start around 22nd April - Earth Day and within it a ship will collect plastic and other types of waste from the river and its tributaries in Romania for five weeks.

The high-technology waste collection ship CollectiX is equipped with a conveyor belt and smart sensors. It uses them to gather information for the quality, type, and location of the waste in the river. Hopefully this will help develop long-term solutions and concepts for preventing the pollution in different areas.

The second largest river in Europe springs in Germany, passes through numerous countries and flows into the Black Sea. Unfortunately, today the Danube is one of the most contaminated rivers in Europe. That also increases the pollution of the Black Sea.

‘The water is one of the most crucial resources for life on the planet. For our future it is vitally important to take care of the constant and sustainable protection of drinking water’, says Ruediger Reknagel, managing director of the Audi ’ecological foundation‘.

During the last year the foundation has pulled out over 3,2 tons of plastic in the Serbian part of the Danube which equals to 110 340 one-litre plastic bottles.

Project “MEMOFISH - memory and future. Stories about the Danube Civilization” is cofinanced by the European Union through European Regional Development Fund under the Interreg V-A Romania-BulgariaProgramme.
